 James E. Hennigan, who built Hennigan Place in approximately 1840, was a prominent farmer in Southern Mecklenburg County. He participated actively in public affairs and served as an official of the Court of Please and Quarter Sessions, the major body of Mecklenburg County government prior to 1868.
