In the 1840's, the Kitchen was outside, unattached, in case of fires, which were frequent.  When the plates were brought into the Dining Room, they would have been put in the Plate Warmer, which would be placed in front of the Fireplace, with its back to the fire, to warm the plates.  The food would be in serving dishes or bowls and passed around so everyone could put the food on a warm plate!
